‘NYPD Blue’ star Austin Majors cause of death finally revealed – what killed him at 27 years old

The death of actor Austin Majors was a shock to everyone, considering that he was only 27 years old. The actor passed away on February 11th, and his cause of death was not initially released.

Austin Majors was best known for his role in NYPD Blue. The long-running crime drama featured Majors as Theo Sipowicz. He played the son of Dennis Franz’s character, the protagonist Detective Andy Sipowicz.

Majors, whose full name was listed as Austin Setmajer-Raglin passed away on February 11, 2023. He was only 27 years old which made his death all the more shocking.

The late child star’s family released a statement that said he was a “loving, artistic, brilliant, and kind human being.”

“Austin took great joy and pride in his acting career. He was an active Eagle Scout and graduated Salutatorian in high school,” the statement continued. “He went on to graduate from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a passion of directing and music producing.”

In addition to his role on NYPD Blue he also had roles in Treasure Planet, as well as on Hercules, Desperate Housewives, How I Met Your Mother, American Dad and more.

When he learned of the death, Dennis Franz paid tribute to him. In a statement, the actor said, “I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Austin’s passing. Austin was always such a joy to have on the set, he brought smiles and happiness to everyone.”

“Some of my favorite scenes during the 12 years of NYPD Blue are with ‘Sipowicz’ and ‘Theo,’ he added. “Every day that Austin worked I would greet him with a special song, ‘It’s Austin Majors’ Day’ sung to the tune of Howdy Doody Time.”

While Franz shared that he had not kept in touch with Majors after his seven seasons on the show, he had left a big impact on him.

“Although we haven’t stayed in touch since the show ended in 2005, I will always remember him fondly,” he said. “My love and condolences to his family,” Franz ended.

The Los Angeles Medical County Examiner listed the cause of death for Austin Majors as “fentanyl toxicity.” According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, fentanyl is “a powerful synthetic opioid analgesic.” And according to the institute, fentanyl can be addictive and lead people overdosing on the substance.
