Jamie Foxx was forced to apologize after fans accused him of posting an antisemitic message on Instagram, and even Jennifer Aniston inadvertently became involved…
The controversy emerged when Jewish news outlet A Wider Frame posted a screenshot of Foxx’s Instagram message which stated: “They killed this dude name Jesus… What do you think they’ll do to you?” Foxx included hashtags #fakefriends and #fakelove.
A Wider Frame criticized the message as “horrifically antisemitic,” saying that the belief that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus has fueled antisemitism for centuries.
Foxx – whose real name is Eric Marlon Bishop – eventually removed his social media post and offered his “sincerest apologies” for any distress caused, clarifying that his message referred to a “fake friend” who had betrayed him.
“I want to apologize to the Jewish community and anyone offended by my post,” wrote Foxx, 55, in a statement shared on his social media accounts. “I understand now that my choice of words was offensive and I’m sorry.”
The ‘Django: Unchained’ star continued: “My heart is filled with love for everyone. I cherish and stand with the Jewish community.”
Supporters of Foxx defended him on social media, saying that it was clear he wasn’t referring to Jews, but to the act of being betrayed by people you know and trust.
One person wrote: “People can’t even speak anymore without someone being offended […] You were clearly talking about someone you thought was a friend who turned out to be a backstabber. The hashtags clearly reference that. Society is so sensitive these days!”
Aniston, 55, became emrboiled in the dispute when the A Wider Frame screenshot implied that she had liked Foxx’s original post.
“This really makes me sick,” she responded to the news organization’s post, addressing Foxx. “I did not ‘like’ this post on purpose or by accident.”
She continued: “And, more importantly, I want to be clear to my friends and anyone hurt by this showing up on their feeds – I do NOT support any form of antisemitism. And I truly don’t tolerate HATE of any kind. Period.”
Some users even accused Aniston of making the apparent misunderstanding worse with her reaction.
“Jennifer Aniston owes Jamie Foxx an apology because this is just silly,” one individual stated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Journalist Brian Krassenstein said that the incident serves as a reminder of “how easy it is to misunderstand people and take things out of context based on different cultural ways of looking at things.”
He continued: “Jamie Foxx clearly apologized for being taken out of context. Can’t we just leave it at that?”
Last month, Foxx was seen in public for the first time since experiencing an undisclosed medical condition that led to his hospitalization in April. At the time, his daughter Corinne assured fans that Foxx was already “on his way to recovery” after receiving “excellent care.”
Foxx was working on the upcoming Netflix comedy Back in Action at the time.
“I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery has some potholes as well, but I’m coming back,” he conveyed in a three-minute Instagram video on July 22.
“Every once in a while I just burst into tears… because it’s been tough, man, I was sick… but now I’ve got my legs under me so you’re going to see me,” shared the Academy Award winner. “I’m able to work.”
