Where in the world is Matt Lauer? Former ‘Today’ co-host enjoys ‘low-key’ life after accusations of sexual harassment

Matt Lauer has remained under the radar ever since he was fired from NBC News in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment, and he wants to keep it that way.

The former Today co-anchor is rarely seen in public, though he’s been said to be “doing great.”

“I think he misses being in the mix sometimes but I don’t think he misses being on television,” Bryant Gumbel, former Today host and longtime friend of Lauer, told Page Six.

“[He’s] doing fine.”

After he was fired, Lauer’s ex-wife Annette Roque filed for divorce after 21 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in 2019, the same year Lauer began dating his current girlfriend Shamin Abas.

While the couple have been dating for nearly four years, their relationship was recently put under the spotlight after Lauer showed up to a charity event without Abas.

“He seemed kind of quiet, not very effervescent. He took a couple of photos, but was by himself,” an attendee told Page Six.

But a source close to the couple claims the former co-host and PR executive are “are very much together.”

“Matt and Shamin are both independent and busy people with responsibilities and obligations in their lives,” a source revealed to People.

“Sometimes they each have something different to do at the same time. Both of them are independent enough to do what is needed if the other can’t come. But they are very much a close and happy couple.”

The insider also provided some insight into Lauer’s “very low key” lifestyle.

“He is happy but prefers to lay low most of the time. When he goes out in public it is because he has causes and events that he cares about.”

Lauer was ousted from NBC after Brooke Nevils, a former network employee, accused the former Today co-host of raping her in his hotel room at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Several other women came forward with similar accusations against Lauer.
